The ProtoTRAK ® CNC/Manual control is simply the best technology solution for small batch machining available today. In my opinion, the Proto-Trak class machine would be highly useful to you. I have no experience with the newest ones, but ran a 1995-ish MX-2 version mounted on a SuperMax Bridgeport clone for a few years and liked it a lot.
the saying is you have to walk before you can run. a prototrak is a excellent machine to start learning basic cnc. once you have mastered using a basic 2 axis cnc then i would say sure try to learn how to use a 3 axis cnc which has 10x the potential to crash the machine.
My work flow is now OneCNC->CAM out->home grown post processor->transfer to machine. One step (but just a double click) from the way any CNC should work. The resulting program comes into the Prototrak as a native .PT4 file, preserves all .Proto-Trak Sport K3 2-Axis CNC vertical mill that can transfer from 2-axis CNC to manual seamlessly. Ground ballscrews, chrome hardened & ground quill, dovetail ways on y & z axis.
